Recipe – Feed the birds! Easy suetless-suet cakes

The holiday season continues!  If you’re like me you’ve got a couple happy, but restless children on your hands for the next few days!  One activity that we enjoy this time of year is making bird feed for our feeders!  This great suet cake recipe is easy enough for the kids to handle on their own and freezes easily so you can keep all of your wildlife happy this winter!  You can pick up the supplies for your feeders at Brandon’s Hardware and Foodland!

“No-Melt Suet for Birds”:

1 cup crunchy peanut butter
1 cup lard
2 cups quick cooking oats
2 cups cornmeal
1 cup white flour
1/3 cup sugar

Melt lard and peanut butter in microwave or stove top. Stir in remaining ingredients. Pour suet mixture into containers sized to fit the suet feeder. Freeze and store suet cakes in freezer (or just chill until firm).

The mixture can also be formed into 3- and 4- inch balls and hung in plastic net bags from a tree branch.

Raisins or unsalted nuts can be added to the mix.
